Standard Modifier Dictionary™(SMD™)
The SMD is a two-tiered classification schema (with an optional third-tier "upper classification" level) that provides a consistent and repeatable set of rules to characterize and catalog inventory. It is the most widely used and accepted standard for describing industrial MRO items, used daily in thousands of plants worldwide.

The SMD consists of a family of mutually-exclusive Nouns (a proper name such as "Valve") and Modifiers (a descriptive word or phrase such as "Gate"), as well as associated Characteristics that describe general part attributes (such as "Size") and Values which describe specific Characteristics (such as "6-inch").

SMD Methodology & Values

In addition to the taxonomy, the SMD provides classification definitions and guidelines, synonymous terms, sample values, images and more to guide the user in building technically complete, standardized, normalized item descriptions.

These structured descriptions and fields are typically utilized in the customer’s Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP), Enterprise Asset Management (EAM), or Master Data Management (MDM) business applications. The SMD is compatible with leading systems including SAP® Materials Management (MM) module, SAP Service and Asset Management, SAP MDM, IBM/MRO Software Maximo®, Mincom®, Ventyx Asset Suite (Indus Passport™), Oracle (PeopleSoft®/JDE), Infor/Datastream, AssetPoint/TabWare, and many others. In addition, the SMD is compatible with upper-level classification schemas such UNSPSC and eCl@ss.

During the past three decades, the SMD has been refined and enriched by processing over 50 million records for a broad range of industries including utilities, oil & gas, petrochemical and chemical refining, pulp and paper, food and beverage, pharmaceutical, aerospace, automotive and distribution. Since each industry has its own unique practices, the SMD is typically tailored to meet the needs of each customer. As a result, the SMD is now the most comprehensive and refined data dictionary for describing industrial MRO items, comprised of 2,500 Noun-Modifier pairs, 2,000 synonyms, 9,000 characteristics, 15,000 definitions and guidelines, 29,000 sample values and more than 1,000 sample reference images.

IHS Intermat Solutions licenses the use of the SMD to its customers for managing their MRO catalog databases. This is done either on a stand-alone basis or in conjunction with a description standardization services project and/or a Struxure® software license.
