Texas Instruments Inc. (TI) introduced a 24-bit, 96-kilohertz (kHz) digital audio interface receiver that is promoted as providing the industry's best jitter performance as low as 50 ps RMS, which is four times better than the nearest stand-alone receiver.

This highly-integrated device is designed to reduce the number of external components required and enhances sound quality in applications such as audio visual (AV)/DVD receivers and amplifiers, automotive audio systems, digital televisions, musical instruments, recording systems and high-performance PC audio interfaces.

The DIR9001 allows the designer to control all functionality through the device's hardware control pins, eliminating the need for an external microcontroller.

Additionally, the DIR9001 integrates a high-performance phase-lock loop (PLL) to not only improve jitter performance but also remove the need for an external clock source when the sample frequency calculator is not used.

Both features are designed to reduce the overall system cost by eliminating additional system components that competing digital audio interface receivers typically require, said TI.

Other benefits include:

  • Support for any input frequency from 28-kHz up to 108-kHz for stereo digital interfaces including Sony/Philips Digital Interface Format (S/PDIF), Electronic Industries Association of Japan (EIAJ) CP-1201, International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) 60958 and Audio Engineering Society (AES)/European Broadcasting Union (EBU).
  • Superior overall system noise performance provided by the flexible master clock outputs with as low as 50 ps jitter.
  • Easier integration into existing designs with 5V-tolerant logic as well as selectable pulse-code-modulation (PCM) output formats.
  • Higher system intelligence and integration with the main control processor via the separate user data, channel data and sampling frequency outputs.
  • Wide ambient temperature range of -40 C to +85 C for automotive applications.

The jitter performance of the DIR9001 makes it an ideal data and clock source for TI's high-performance digital-to-analog converter (DAC) products, such as the PCM1792A, to provide the highest performance DAC output available, said TI.

The DIR9001 also complements TI's wide range of S/PDIF and sample rate conversion (SRC) technologies for consumer and professional audio applications. TI's digital audio interface products range from 96-kHz receivers and transmitters to combination 216-kHz SRC and S/PDIF transceivers capable of 144 db SRC.
