Renesas Technology Corp. announced the R61517, a single-chip liquid crystal display (LCD) controller-driver that supports amorphous wide quarter video graphics array (QVGA) (WQVGA: 240 x 432 pixels) size thin-film transistor (TFT) color LCD modules.

The R61517 is targeted at mobile devices such as mobile phone handsets, personal navigation devices (PNDs) and portable multimedia players. Sample shipments began in November 2007 in Japan.

Renesas previously released the R61509, a single-chip TFT color LCD controller-driver supporting high-definition (HD) images and WQVGA size displays.

The new R61517 single-chip TFT LCD controller-driver adds a backlight controller to reduce the power consumption of the LCD module and provide a command format compatible with the mobile industry processor interface (MIPI) instruction set as the system interface with the microcontroller (MCU).

Product features include:

  • Support for WQVGA size displays and gamma adjustment function for picture quality. The R61517 implements single-chip support for WQVGA size screens, which have a 16:9 aspect ratio suitable for mobile TV displays, Renesas said. It also has an on-chip red/green/blue (RGB) independent gamma adjustment function that allows setting of separate gradation generation circuits for red, green and blue.

  • Backlight control (BLC) function for approximately 30% reduction in power consumption of the LCD module. The R61517 has an on-chip BLC function. It automatically senses the type of image content being displayed and dynamically controls the backlight brightness and corresponding control data processing to match.

  • MIPI interface. The R61517 employs an MIPI interface as the system interface with the MCU. It conforms to MIPI-display command set (DCS) and supports MIPI database interface (DBI) type B (18 b/16 b/9 b/8 b), MIPI DBI type C (option 1 and option 3) and MIPI-display pixel interface (DPI). This interface increases the reusability and compatibility of mobile device development resources and shortens the time required for development, Renesas said.
Functions are also provided for reducing power consumption, including an eight-color display function and a power management function.

According to Renesas, these can be used for applications requiring extended battery drive durations, such as digital mobile phones with color displays, multimedia players and mobile TV terminals.

The R61517 is supplied in a chip on glass (COG) package, enabling direct facedown mounting on the glass panel.
