ECHA Issues Reminder of REACH Pre-Registration Deadline
October 16, 2009 // Published as a news service by IHS
The European Chemicals Agency (ECHA) reminded chemical companies of the upcoming Nov. 30 deadline for the pre-registration of certain chemical substances as well as high-volume chemical manufacturers and importers.
The pre-registration is required for compliance with the European Union (EU) regulation for REACH - Registration, Evaluation, Authorisation and Restriction of Chemicals.
This deadline applies to companies within the first six months of manufacturing, importing or "using" a phase-in substance that needs to be registered by Nov. 30, 2010. In the context of REACH legislation, "using" means producing articles, or importing for the first time an article containing a phase-in substance that requires registration.
Under REACH, a phase-in substance needs to be registered by a manufacturer or importer by Nov. 30, 2010 if it is:
- Manufactured or imported in the EU in quantities of 1,000 tons or more per year.
- Classified as carcinogenic, mutagenic or toxic to reproduction (category 1 or 2) and manufactured or imported in the EU, in quantities of one ton or more per year.
- Classified as very toxic to aquatic organisms or as one that may cause long-term adverse effects in the aquatic environment (R50/53), plus manufactured or imported in the EU in quantities reaching 100 tons or more per year.
For more information, see ECHA's late pre-registration web page.
