ECHA Clarifies Its Accreditation Policy for REACH-Related Services
August 3, 2009 // Published as a news service by IHS
The European Chemicals Agency (ECHA) issued a statement on July 30 clarifying that it does not accredit or endorse companies providing advice or hands-on support to others on regulatory compliance.
ECHA manages compliance with the regulation for REACH - Registration, Evaluation, Authorisation and Restriction of Chemicals - across the European Union (EU).
ECHA made this statement in response to reports by third countries that some EU legal and consulting companies are claiming to be accredited or somehow endorsed by ECHA, especially in the context of substance registration or the formation of substance information exchange forums (SIEFs).
No company can rightfully claim it has been accredited by ECHA. However, ECHA stated there may be times when it has a contractual relationship with a consultant and asks it to, for example, collect information on ECHA's behalf.
In all such cases, however, the contracted company will be able to present clear documentation mandating its work.
