Five development tool and real-time operating system (RTOS) vendors announced support for the Freescale Semiconductor MPC5121e system-on-chip (SoC) processor.

Built on Power Architecture technology, the multicore MPC5121e processor can be used for telematics applications, as well as industrial and commercial applications that require graphics, multimedia and real-time audio processing.

The MPC5121e processor combines an e300 core built on Power Architecture technology with an integrated 2D/3D graphics core and a fully programmable 32 b reduced-instruction-set-computer- (RISC-) based multimedia acceleration core for audio processing.

The MPC5121e device is designed for application code compatibility with existing solutions based on the MPC5200 architecture. This compatibility provides scalability across product solutions to bring new end products to market quickly and at a lower cost, Freescale said.

Freescale offers telematics system developers support for the MPC5121e, including the CodeWarrior development studio mobileGT processor edition and a Linux OS board support package (BSP) optimized for the mobileGT architecture and the MPC5121e development platform.

The MPC5121e processor platform is backed by an ecosystem of tool and RTOS vendors, each a member of the mobileGT Alliance, which includes vendors in the automotive telematics industry.

"Freescale is demonstrating a higher vision and fulfilling a demand for high-performance embedded graphics in the marketplace with the MPC5121e," said Dan Joncas, vice president of sales at ALT Software.

"2D/3D graphics will be an essential building block in next-generation embedded applications, and by partnering with ALT Software, who brings more than 10 years of 2D/3D graphics experience, Freescale can deliver to the market a total solution with exceptional performance, quality and support for [its] customers," Joncas said.

Dave Curley, vice president of marketing at QNX Software Systems, said, "Our automotive customers are always looking for the latest hardware and software tools for developing telematics applications that will stand the test of time once the cars leave the showroom.

"Freescale's MPC5121e makes it easier than ever for our customers to quickly transition their QNX-based automotive telematics systems to take advantage of the enhanced performance and power efficiency offered in this extended line of processors," Curley said.
