The Department of Defense (DoD) released a revised version of Risk Management Guide for DoD Acquisition, Sixth Edition.
The purpose of the guide is to assist DoD and contractor program managers (PMs), program offices and integrated product teams (IPTs) in managing program risks during the acquisition process.
The guide was released by the Office of the Undersecretary of Defense for Personnel and Readiness (OUSD) Acquisition, Technology and Logistics (AT&L) Systems and Software Engineering organization.
Changes in the new version reflect lessons learned from the application of risk management in other DoD programs. Emphasis has been placed on:
- The role and management of future root causes.
- Distinguishing between risk management and issue management.
- Tying risk likelihood to the root cause rather than the consequence.
- Tracking the status of risk mitigation implementation vs. risk tracking.
- Focusing on event-driven technical reviews to help identify risk areas and the effectiveness of ongoing risk mitigation efforts.
The risk guide contains baseline information and explanations for a well-structured risk management program. It offers descriptions and explanations of core steps to assist in managing risks in acquisition programs, focusing on risk mitigation planning and implementation rather on risk avoidance, transfer or assumption.
The Risk Management Guide for DoD Acquisition, Sixth Edition can be found at the AT&L Knowledge Sharing System (AKSS) web site at http://deskbook.dau.mil/jsp/default.jsp. Feedback on the guide can be e-mailed to ATL-ED@osd.mil.
