According to a CIMdata program review of the Dassault Systèmes (DS) CATIA PLM Express (CPE) with the embedded SmarTeam design express (SDE) package, DS "has clearly demonstrated [its] commitment to the CPE program and to midsized companies."

A product lifecycle management (PLM) tool for midmarket companies, CPE provides access to computer-aided design (CAD), network computer (NC), analysis and product data management (PDM) capabilities in an integrated and extensible package.

SDE supports design collaboration on design-related data such as drawings, digital mockup (DMU), manufacturing, analysis and other related product data.

John MacKrell, CIMdata senior consultant, said, "Investment in PLM is growing as its worth has been validated in enabling companies to become more effective, more innovative and more successful.

"Over the last several years, however," said MacKrell, "PLM has clearly become more attractive to midsized companies both in capability and in total cost of ownership."

Because PLM suppliers have introduced tools targeted at their needs and financial capacity, "midsized enterprises can finally realize the benefits that PLM has offered larger firms," MacKrell said.

He said that although DS has not historically focused on midsized companies, ENOVIA SmarTeam has been successful in the midmarket for more than a decade.

A key aspect of DS CPE is that its CATIA component is a subset of its CAD offering. This, MacKrell said, allows CPE users to access the full breadth of CATIA's capabilities and to expand their PLM scope with ENOVIA SmarTeam.

CIMdata said midsized companies can benefit from the implementation of PLM strategies and tools, and the lessons learned by midsized companies in their adoption of PLM will benefit all enterprises, regardless of size.

"We welcome Dassault Systèmes' CPE portfolio and [its] focus on providing broad-based PLM solutions to midsized companies," MacKrell said.
