STMicroelectronics Completes Miniature Serial EEPROM Families with 128 Kb, 64 Kb Introductions

STMicroelectronics (ST) is offering a serial electrically erasable programmable read-only memory (EEPROM) portfolio from 2 Kb to 128 Kb in both inter-integrated circuit (I2C) and service provider interface (SPI) versions, with all family devices featuring micro leadframe (MLP) package technology.
This family of devices is targeted at applications including Bluetooth headsets and modules, wireless local area network (LAN) adapters, portable media players, cellular handsets and smartphones, camcorders and digital still cameras.
Three new devices in the 2 millimeter by 3 millimeter by 0.6 millimeter MLP8 package allow designers to choose from footprint-compatible devices at any required density, saving space, cost and development time, ST said.
The M95128 device has a sub-3 µA stand-by mode, allowing its use in energy-sensitive battery-powered products, according to ST.
The four-wire SPI supports communication at up to 2 Mbps and also allows software-based write protection, in addition to standard protection implemented in hardware.
The built-in I2C interface in the 64 Kb M24C64 and 128 Kb M24128 devices supports 400 kbps Fast Mode communication, operating as a slave on the I2C bus. Both devices reduce current draw to below 1 µA in stand-by mode, to help extend battery life in portable and handheld products, ST said.
From a system designer's point of view, the operating voltage range is compatible with virtually all application-specific integrated circuits (ASICs) and chipsets.
The M24C64 and M24128 are specified to operate with power supplies as low as 1.7 V.
Other features include a write-control input, byte- and page-write modes, random and sequential read modes, self-timed programming cycle and automatic address incrementing.
Device lifetime is greater than one million write cycles, and data retention is more than 40 years, according to the company.
