Micron Technology Inc. introduced a one-fifth inch 2 megapixel (MP) imaging system-on-chip (SoC) for thin mobile phones, PC cameras and personal digital assistants (PDAs).
Powered by Micron DigitalClarity technology, the new imaging SOC (product number MT9D113) offers low-light sensitivity and high-speed image capture, with video modes of 15 frames per second (fps) at full resolution and 30 fps in viewfinder mode.
With its one-fifth inch optical format, the SoC has a 6.5 millimeter by 6.5 millimeter camera module size.
According to Micron, it provides an easy upgrade for small format video graphics array (VGA) and 1.3 MP parts and is a cost-down tool for larger format, one-quarter inch, 2 MP parts.
Additional features designed into the MT9D113 include a one-time-programmable (OTP) memory and both serial mobile industry processor interface (MIPI) and traditional parallel outputs.
OTP offers programmability and manufacturing flexibility by allowing designers to program the camera to use multiple lenses and enabling production calibration of lens parameters, Micron said. Additionally, the serial output requires fewer pins.
"Consumers have come to expect superior image quality with today's mobile camera devices, and the Micron MT9D113 offers this image quality in a cost-effective 2 MP complete imaging SoC format," said Sandor Barna, senior director of marketing for Micron imaging business.
"With full camera functionality on-chip, this format helps mobile device manufacturers deliver their end products to market faster and more efficiently," Barna said.
The imaging SoC is sampling now with mass production expected in March 2008.
