The International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) published IEC 62075, which helps make designers of audio-video and information technology equipment consider the life cycle of a product to make the best decisions on energy efficiency and reducing environmental impact at the start of the design and development process.
IEC 62075 - Audio/video, information and communication technology equipment - Environmentally conscious design helps designers consider the materials and energy used in its manufacturing to its efficiency when switched on or in standby mode through to the safe disposal of the product at the end of its life.
Designers are told to consider the product's energy efficiency, the use of various materials such as different types of plastics and the product packaging, said the IEC.
To increase energy efficiency, the standard helps explain the different operating modes and the relevant benefits/drawbacks to be considered.
The standard also gives advice on the environmental regulations that are coming into force and provides links to government environmental agencies around the world, said the IEC.
