Fujitsu Adds LPC Series to Line of 8 b Microcontrollers for Consumer Appliances

Fujitsu Microelectronics Ltd. added three series featuring low pin count (LPC), with 20 or fewer pins, to its F2MC-8FX family of 8 b microcontrollers with embedded flash memory for use in home appliances and other consumer electronics.
Sample shipments of the new microcontrollers known as the MB95200H series, MB95210H series and MB95220H series, will be phased in starting in September 2008.
In recent years, demand has grown in the Asian market for LPC 8 b microcontrollers for use in home appliances and other consumer electronics products, such as water heaters, electric pots, dehumidifiers and hair dryers, Fujitsu said.
In response to these needs, Fujitsu Microelectronics added the 8-pin MB95210H series, 16-pin MB95220H series and the 20-pin MB95200H series.
Aside from their use as main microcontrollers, the new series can also be used as sub-microcontrollers, Fujitsu said.
The three new series also use a one-line on-chip debug that uses only one pin on the microcontroller. Fujitsu said this minimizes the number of pins used for debugging in product development.
Fujitsu Microelectronics also is providing the MB2146-403-01-E starter kit, which is a product development environment combined as a single package.
Features of the new series include:
- Use of the F2MC-8FX complex instruction set computer (CISC) central processing unit (CPU), with a maximum operating frequency of 16.25 MHz and a minimum instruction time of 61.5 nanoseconds.
- Embedded peripheral parts.
- An internal CR oscillating circuit (precision level ±2%) that runs the operating clock and a low-voltage detection circuit that detects a drop in voltage.
- A composite timer that can shift timer functions.
In the embedded composite timer, depending on the program, one channel can be selected with either a pulse-width counter, pulse-width modulation (PWM), interval timer or input capture that measures interval times.
