Freescale Semiconductor expanded its 8 b S08SG microcontroller (MCU) family to provide scalable performance and memory options for cost-sensitive automotive body and chassis applications.
The new family members - the S08SG16 and S08SG32 MCUs - provide a general-purpose device for body control modules, local interconnect network (LIN) nodes, mirror modules, window-lift, battery management systems, heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) control and heated seat modules.
Operating at up to 40 MHz with 16 KB and 32 KB flash memory options, the S08SG16/32 MCUs have an on chip timer and can be used for motor control applications.
The devices also are designed to enable development of LIN systems through an on-chip serial communications interface (SCI).
The SCI module allows LIN break detection and synchronization without the use of an external timer channel, Freescale said.
According to the company, the S08SG16/32 devices offer a high level of integration that can reduce development cost, save board space and enhance system-level quality by eliminating the need for peripheral board components, such as external clock sources.
Other features include low voltage inhibit (LVI) circuits, voltage regulators, input/output (I/O) multiplexers, watchdog circuits and analog-to-digital converters (ADCs).
The S08SG16/32 devices offer an on-chip background debug mode (BDM) capability that developers can use to perform debugging and emulation on the fly. According to Freescale, the BDM feature is critical for debugging multi-MCU systems in chassis and powertrain applications without interfering with software execution.
The S08SG16/32 MCUs are backed by an ecosystem of hardware and software development tools and are supported by the Freescale CodeWarrior development studio for microcontrollers v6.1. Freescale also offers online training for developers.
Samples of the S08SG16/32 devices are available now.
