Intermec Technologies Corp. was awarded a blanket purchasing agreement (BPA) to provide passive radio frequency identification (RFID) technical engineering services to the U.S. Department of Defense and the U.S. Coast Guard.

According to Intermec, the award is the third Automatic Identification Technology (AIT) RFID award group resulting from a government request for quotation issued in December 2004. Earlier this year, Intermec was granted BPAs to provide RFID technology tags and readers.

The awards, said Intermec, are part of the government's AIT RFID initiative to provide asset visibility in its global logistics pipeline, whether in-process, in-storage or in-transit.

Intermec also is prime contractor on a five-year U.S. Army-administered contract to provide a range of automatic identification technologies. The contract, said the company, supplies a line of advanced mobile computing, wireless communications, data-collection systems and services engineered for all federal agencies and branches of the U.S. Department of Defense worldwide.

RFID, a complement to current bar-code-based inventory and asset-tracking systems, allows companies and organizations to automatically track inventory throughout an entire supply chain, said Intermec. RFID automatic data-collection systems typically do not require line-of-sight or manual scanning as do most bar code-based systems, the company noted.
