The Accredited Standards Committee (ASC) X12 and Edifecs Inc. renewed an agreement letting X12 members access the Edifecs SpecBuilder for use in X12 standards development. Edifecs SpecBuilder 6.1 is a guideline authoring tool, letting users create, customize and publish guidelines, generate test data, and compare and migrate different versions of guidelines. According to ASC X12, it facilitates a rich quality assurance environment for data testing.

As Context Inspired Component Architecture (CICA) message development proliferates in ASC X12, the group revamped and enhanced its Tools for Members program and called for technology provider contributions to help accelerate and harmonize the development of CICA components across the committee.

Edifecs SpecBuilder includes support for a rich set of Electronic Data Interchange (EDI) standards including:

  • X12 and UN/EDIFACT.
  • Healthcare EDI standards such as HIPAA, HL7 and National Council for Prescription Drug Programs Inc. (NCPDP).
  • Flat file formats.
  • XML based formats such as XML Schema (XSD).

"We are so pleased to have Edifecs join the newly invigorated X12 Tools for Members Program," said ASC X12 Chair Ralph Berwanger. "The Edifecs product will help X12ers ease interoperability issues from a cross-section of industries and business processes."

"We have enjoyed working with the developers of X12 and believe in the value of contributing to the standards development process," said Andrea Danes, Edifecs association partner program coordinator. "Deepening Edifecs partnership with ASC X12 by providing additional licenses of SpecBuilder 6.1 aligns with our goals of helping our clients achieve the highest possible degree of automation and efficiency through the use of EDI and related standards such as X12."
